MAKE FETCH HAPPEN
An awareness Campaign.
A Call to Action.
By Student Reporter, Lizzie Therman
When North Shore student, Gretchen Wieners invented a catchphrase, she had no idea that it would lead to a personal crusade.
HISTORY
When 17 year old Gretchen Wieners described her classmate’s bracelet in a new way, she had no idea how much it would change her life. Ironically, this historic moment was completely unplanned. “I just made up the term on the spot!” Wieners explains, “My friend Regina (George) had just used the word ‘adorable’, so the pressure was on me to come up with a word that was different from her word. So I tried to think of something that meant cool and cute. Then it just came to me…Fetch!”
PUSHBACK
Initial reactions to Fetch were mixed. While bracelet owner Cady Heron seemed to appreciate the compliment, the aforementioned George was resistant. Wieners states, “Right away, Regina was anti-Fetch. I thought she might be jealous that I had invented it, so I told her that Fetch came from England. It was the first continent I could think of.”
However, George continued to resent Fetch, and would regularly make her feelings known. Tensions exploded backstage at the Winter Talent Show, when a raging George screamed, “Gretchen, stop trying to make Fetch happen! It isn’t going to happen!” (This publication contacted the George family for comment, but their only response came in the form of a link to Mrs. George’s online essential oils business.) Wieners was devastated. “So like, Regina didn’t just attack the word Fetch, but also like, me, personally. So it was like, totally unfair! All I was trying to do was break the oppressive grip of expressions like ‘cool’ and ‘awesome’.”
A CAUSE IS BORN
Was that backstage blow-up the end of Fetch? Not on Gretchen Wiener’s watch. She explains, “I have decided that this is the perfect moment for me to finally stand up to Regina. I believe in Fetch, and she’s been sedated in the hospital since that bus hit her.” Doubling down on her cause, Gretchen has launched an awareness campaign that is taking North Shore by storm. MAKE FETCH HAPPEN seeks to spread the word about her word, and students are responding. At the core of the campaign are the pink wristbands you have no doubt seen around our school. Credit for the wristband concept goes to Wieners’ friend, Karen Smith. In Smith’s words, “Yeah, well, I thought that if people could actually wear the word Fetch, then more people would hear it. Well, see it. People fight for endangered animals, but who is fighting for endangered words? I’m so super proud that my idea is helping the world. No one has ever used wristbands for a cause before!”
A CALL TO ACTION
Want to get involved? That’s easy, says MFH founder Gretchen Wieners. “First, go get a “MAKE FETCH HAPPEN” wristband. They look super cute on everyone, and they’re pink, so you can totally wear them on Wednesdays. Then, all you have to do is take photos of your wristband out in the world. If you visit a cool local place, or drive out of Illinois, or see a natural disaster, or witness a crime in progress, take a quick photo of your wristband!”
Readers can purchase wristbands for just two dollars. They are available in our own Viola Barry Theatre. Karen Smith recommends buying more than one, “They make great gifts. You can give them to your family, your friends, or your first cousins!” MAKE FETCH HAPPEN photos can be uploaded to The North Shore Roar using the link below. We will add your pics to our collection and hopefully together we will spread Fetch all over the world. We thank you in advance for your support. Go Lions!
